Katarina C. Class of 2012 Senior!! | Clovis Senior Portrait Photography

What better way to start off 2012 then with a fun, great session of a high school senior. Oh but this isn’t just any high school senior, this is one of my Senior Reps! Katarina is. . . . well just plain awesome. She is a Clovis High School senior who is a great musician. But not just any musician, she is a drummer. How awesomely awesome is that?

We had a great December session. The weather was fantastic, and it just so happens her home is an artists playground. Literally I could have stayed there for days. To top it off Katarina and her parents pretty much let me have free reign to do what I do, which if your an artist you can relate how much you love it when clients do this.

I have shot a wide variety of things in my short time as a photographer but high school seniors are my favorite to photograph. I can relate to them easier than most photographers and my sessions are really just like two friends hanging out, well except one of the friends has a lot of camera gear and takes your picture every 5 seconds, but other than that yeah. That’s exactly what this session was just relaxing and I even had my ears blown out when Katarina was rocking out on the drums. It was great haha. Just kidding, but she is an insane musician and don’t be surprised when you see her playing drums for U2.

I have rambled enough I think so it’s time to get to the pictures!

This last photo is pretty rockstar right? Hope you enjoy the photos be sure to check out the facebook page to keep up with what I’m up to and get regular photo updates! Want to be a rockstar senior too? Head to the website and book your session!

A Double Header – Actor Headshots

I don’t know about you but I think my title is pretty clever. I’ll admit I’m proud of it. Anyways that is exactly what I have for you today on the blog. Jaclyn and Nick. They are both pursuing careers in the theater. Now when you say “theater” you have to say it like this, theee-ah-taah. Now after your done taking a second to say that outloud because I know you did, I would like to point out the fact that am pretty good with phonetics. Maybe if this whole photography thing doesn’t work out I can call up Webster and see if he needs any help with the dictionary.

Okay levity aside, It also turns out that Nick & Jaclyn are a couple.  Couples photos and actors headshots? Is that even possible? You bet. They called me up and away we went to give them so great head shots for their auditions. We decided that we would do a mix of outdoor and some studio work to give them a variety of stuff to choose from. It was a great day, weather wise couldn’t have asked for better weather, Jaclyn and Nick came prepared and plus they are actors so you know they are awesome. They even make pretty good photo assistants when I needed it. So before I bore you to sleep with all my talking here are some of the favs from the session.

If you are an aspiring actor or model and want to book your session visit www.davidjamesorozco.com and send me and inquiry. These two were fantastic to shoot with and I had a great time. Hope you enjoyed the pictures. Live creative.

Danae P. | Clovis Portrait Session

Every once and a while I like to try new things. I have a certain recipe for how I make photos but deviating from that and testing out new waters is something that all artists must do now and then. You either stumble upon something that works and will add to your arsenal or it will just plain suck, so you know not to do that again in the future. Now believe me when I say you will run into a lot of “it sucks” but luckily with the digital age “film” is pretty cheap nowadays.

Cue our star for this post. Danae. I happened to meet her in one of my biology labs at Fresno State. She is down-to-earth, one of those people who you will definitely have fun with. Eventually she found out that I was a photographer and I found out that she had always wanted to be a model. Cue the pictures.

Zaina | Fresno Portrait Session

How awesome of a name is Zaina? I think it’s pretty cool. Anyway I met her a while back. I had a photo session scheduled and it got rescheduled last minute. I was kinda bummed because I was really in the mood to go out and have a great shoot that day, so I put the word out to friends and fans on Facebook that I  needed a model for a last minute shoot. Two girls replied and one of them was Zaina.

Now we are back for her own session, yay! She isn’t a model, and before you start screaming protests at me I promise I am not lying I would never dream of lying to fans. . . .duh. However she is the most natural person I have ever met in front of a camera. She may not be a model but she definitely should be. Plus she has great style, and is a blast to shoot with.

We had an perfect, clear day to shoot on. It was kind of hot but all you Fresnans are used to the heat so it wasn’t a problem. I’ll cut the talking so you can see the photos already :) .

She had no idea I was taking this shot, but it was too good to pass up. Look at that light!

How to be Different

Have you ever tried to be something your not? Maybe you tried to fit in with that certain group of friends because you really liked them and wanted them to like you. Maybe it was a boyfriend, or team, or you have a business and are looking for the answer. How do you be different when there is already soo much out there, so many people before you and a lot of talent out here.

The answer is really simple. And it just kind of clicked for me a few minutes ago. I am sitting here replying to a client inquiry, client inquiry sounds so professional, but really it’s just someone wanting to know how the heck everything works with my business. As I am typing I am thinking “how do I really differentiate myself?” Do I offer some crazy new and insane product that no one else has? No that’s not practical and the fact that I used crazy and insane in the same description screams expensive. What do I do to stand out in a sea of copycats, and imitators. Then it hits me as I read the message that I have been typing to the client. I just have to be myself. Don’t pretend to be anything.

Yeah, I am a 20 year old business owner and professional photographer. There aren’t that many of us out there. And of all the 20 year old business owners how many of them are me? How many of them see what I see, or have my same personality and talent? Zero. I am the only one and so why would I go and try to act like the 35 year old business owner, why would I try to be like something I’m not there by doing the exact opposite of what I want.

I am young. That doesn’t mean you aren’t going to get quality. Try me and then tell me what you think of my quality of products. I am confident in that. But I have so many things that, that 35 or 40 or however business owner doesn’t have. I have drive, motivation, I am hip haha at least I think so, and I’m not afraid to take risks and be “comfortable” in my business.

So check me out. www.davidjamesorozco.com. Got questions? Don’t be afraid to ask. Want to try something different and book a session? I’d love that, and I think you will too.

Stranger #2 Jake | 100 Strangers Project David J. Orozco Photography

So let’s set up the scene here. I’m heading in the coffee shop to meet with a client and present and give her, her prints. I walked in and almost walked right past the people I was meeting, in doing so I noticed a lot of interesting people staring at me while waiting for their drinks. So I stayed a bit talked and eventually left. On my way in initially I saw out of my peripheral vision a guy sitting down playing guitar. On my way outI walked right past him and on my way to my car I thought “hey I think that would make a good picture,”.

Now that’s a simplified version of what went on in my head, a lot more goes into this whole stranger business. I take into account the light that they happen to be in, how best to use that light, if there is a lot of people around, if the person seems like they are having a bad, good, or average day. Yeah so basically I’m a psychologist too, just not certified yet. Seriously though I did a quick check to make sure I had my camera in the car, grabbed it, and walked back. This is when I met Jake. I asked if I could sit down, and we talked for a bit. He just came out and was relaxing outside with his drink playing some music. Right now he is in the process of recording a few songs also. He was really awesome about letting me take a few photos for my project. The only catch is that when he is famous he has to use my photos, not really just kidding haha. Anyway check out here you go!

Stranger #1 | 100 Strangers Project

I love taking photos of people. I love how every person interacts differently in front of a camera. I’m very sensitive to all the emotions we display, and love documenting them. When I’m out of my element I can be kind of shy. To help me break that and to have the chance to photograph people in a different setting I have started a 100 Strangers project. The goal is to go out, meet 100 Strangers and take their picture, learn a little about them and come back and post it here.

Yesterday I photographed my first “stranger”. Let me tell you this project takes some guts to do. I was soo nervous. I know some people just flat out don’t like their photo taken. And after listing the million things that could go wrong in my head, I took a deep breath and went for it. Now I know I’m going to butcher this name and I’m soo sorry so if your out there and see this please shoot me an email with the right spelling. Anyway this is Validia. She is a senior at Fresno State majoring in psych and women studies. She was super nice about the whole thing and we even got to talking for a bit. She has these lightning bolt tattoos on her forearms that caught my eye and they actually mean strength. Oddly enough the symbol for lightning has been popping up around me every where, people with it tattooed, Harry Potter, my girlfriend. . .maybe it means I’m going to be struck by lightning, who knows. Anyway she was really cool and let me take a couple photos and I was off.

Be on the look out for stranger # 2! I think I’m going to have a lot of fun with this project.

Tawnie + Phil (Love) | Fresno Clovis Portrait Photography

Have you ever been around two people who you can’t help but have fun with? How about someone with that “contagious laugh”. You know the laugh that keeps you laughing a lot longer after the joke was said just because it’s is sooo funny. Ladies and gentlemen I give you, Tawnie & Phil.

Tawnie is a long time friend of mine so naturally had to say yes when she wanted photos of her and her man. She is dating Phil. For those of you who know Phil, I don’t really need to say this but he is hil-lari-ous. You will honestly not find two more down-to-earth people. That coupled with the fact that they look great together, pretty much never stopped laughing, and that they know how to have a great time made for one of my favorite sessions.

The weather was HOT. Like seriously, hot. I got out of the car and probably started sweating. They were troopers though and keep that in mind when you see these pictures. One more thing. I have to say thanks to my good buddy Manvir. He came out on the shoot to help me a bit and even take a few photos. We pretty much had a party. That just how all my sessions are. Awesome.

Anyway check out their photos!

Manvir! The man!
